The installation Dwary is at the centre of Iv Toshain’s solo presentation at the PARALLEL VIENNA Art Fair at the Jugendstiltheater. The three-by-two-metre work resembles a carpet “woven” from 650 steel shuriken. Several dozen rise vertically from the otherwise horizontal rows, standing like soldiers.

The gleaming stars appear decorative from a distance, but up close reveal hand-sharpened blades reminiscent of crosses. The work contrasts cold steel and faith while evoking female traditions of weaving and embroidery.

Alongside Dwary, Toshain presents a Performative Painting, created by throwing blades directly at silk-covered canvas.

Iv Toshain, born in 1980, studied in Sofia, Vienna and Milan. Her work has been shown at the Belvedere Vienna, Lentos Art Museum Linz, MAK Vienna and the Heidi Horten Collection. She had museum solo exhibitions at MoMA Tbilisi (2021) and the National Gallery Sofia (2025). In 2026, she is represented at the 61st Venice Biennale in the National Pavilion of the Republic of Nauru.

MONEV CONTEMPORARY presents IV TOSHAIN at Booth J2, Gallery Statement, Jugendstiltheater. Toshain is also featured in PARALLEL KITCHEN, the fair’s curated special exhibition dedicated to Eat Art and Daniel Spoerri.
